This was such a cool book. I loved this book. Interspecies communication!!! How could I not? This beautiful, speculative story about a possible near future is at turns bleak and hopeful, discouraging and extraordinary in the possibilities it explores. Weaving together the stories of an obsessed marine biologist, a conscious android, a scarred and deadly security agent, and a brilliant but damaged neuro scientist, in a world desecrated and nearly destroyed by human acquisitiveness, this book is smart. Creative. Curious. Alarming.
Some of the side stories were a bit tricky to follow. Perhaps it would have been easier if I had been reading and could double back, rather than listening to an audiobook, but I was engaged and all in from the beginning. Just this idea of interspecies communication held me. Add octopuses and no way could I put it down. The idea of exploring what language is and can be, given an entirely different biology, wow. (I might add that Arrival is one of my favorite movies of ALL time, pondering how the way we use language can shape the world, shape our brains, change everything.)
I love your book reviews. Thank you for your post. Exploring language and how it shapes us has always been a fascinating topic for me.

I took you up on your recommendation and just finished watching Arrival. So much to ponder. I put The Mountain in the Sea on my “to read” list. My local library is getting a copy soon.

I read The Mountain and the Sea. It gave me so much to think about. Each of the chapter intros sent my mind going in so many interesting directions. I’ve been reading about this new ChatGBT. It’s all so amazing and terrifying at the same time.
