I found this book at Half Price Books wandering around Seattle yesterday. I had never heard of this Roald Dahl book and for $1.99 it was a must read! It is a very short book and is partially illustrated but a fun, quick kind of twisted read.

The story is about two people, a man and woman who live in the same building. One upstairs, one downstairs.  The man who is upstairs, Mr Hoppy, fancies his downstairs neighbor, Mrs. Silver.  Mrs. Silver has a tortoise that she is in love with, though she wishes he would grow faster. Mr Hoppy hatches a plan to help make this happen, which involves buying 140 tortoises. I won’t tell you the rest in case you want to read it, but I question the moral of the story which is something like ‘lying and manipulating someone will get you what you want’.

Anyhow, Roald Dahl is a twisted fellow and I enjoy his playful writing very much. This was a fun, low stakes find that I enjoyed.
