I have just finished reading and exploring Hafizah Geter’s debut collection of poems and I am knocked flat. These poems traverse many landscapes, internal and external/brutal and beautiful. These are spare pieces that pack a big punch as she deals with issues of love, loss, racism, abuse, police brutality, family. They are, at once, accessible and dense.
Born in Nigeria, her family moved to the US when she was about 3, and both countries are deeply present in her work. Her father, Tyrone Geter, painted the portrait of her mother which graces the cover of this book.
