I can’t find JNaz’s original post about Blackstock. If I could, I’d post this there. I have in my hands from the library this collection of GLB’s drawings of collections of all sorts of animate and inanimate objects. It’s delightful to look at! And inside the front and back covers are his beautifully handwritten recipes for “Special Exotic Soups” like Cream of Pineapple Soup.
I want to share one of the descriptions below one of his drawings in the “MONSTERS OF THE DEEP” collection, which I especially love: “The extremely fierce, mean, combative and hideous green moray eel of the tropical Atlantic This 6-foot figure gives big germy & dangerous bites to anyone or anything it attacks” Got his point across, yes?
His collections are grouped into these main categories, which cover a lot of ground:
OUR FAMOUS BIRDS
FISH & THE LIKE
THE DOGS
INSECTS & ARACHNIDS
THE PLANTS
THE TOOLS
THE NOISEMAKERS
THE VEHICLES
AVIATION COLLECTION
BOATING & SEAMANSHIP
ARCHITECTURAL COLLECTION
THE THINGS TO WEAR
THE LAST BUT NOT LEAST
I hope you can see this book some day!
Teri, I am so, so glad that you have this book in your hands! And a little jealous. My library did not have it. I put in a request for purchase but came back not available through their supplier. I could do an interlibrary loan but I know those cost the library quite a bit of $. Suspect that the only way I am going to get my hands on it is to purchase it.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with Blackstock. Love the categories.

You are lucky, Teri. My library doesn’t have a copy of the book either. I worked with autistic/Asperger’s syndrome children and young adults as a speech therapist. I am tempted to buy a copy for myself. Thanks for rekindling my interest in Blackstone’s fascinating art!
