This is an absolutely riveting conversation between Helena de Groot and Sophus Helle. If you love language, listen.

  1. I listened to the interview with Sophus Helle. It sent me thinking in so many directions. It took me back to my first introduction to Gilgamesh in my high school world history class. Then in seminary, one of my fellow students performed a one-man show; he acted out the story of Gilgamesh as part of his Mdiv degree. Going back to the beginning of written history has always fascinated me. Listening to Helle talk about learning ancient languages left me in total awe of his skills. The thought of trying to read cuneiform tablets is mind boggling. I also found it amazing that Enheduana’s poetry is still so relevant. I loved learning about the world’s first named author–a woman! I too was riveted. Thank you for sharing the link.

    1. Barbara, so glad you enjoyed it. I was fascinated by the idea of learning a dead language. And cuneiform, wow. So much multi layered meaning in both. So much dependent on context. The first named author – Enheduana – must look into her.
