Wild Life by Molly Gloss

Recommended by @foshee07, I have been working through this novel over the last several weeks. It was delicious – literary fiction – the protagonist a turn of the century female author with a mouth and opinions – hilarious commentary and a highly engaging story. Her housekeeper has a daughter and the daughter’s daughter goes on a logging adventure in Oregon with the father — young Harriet goes missing. Our protagonist, Charlotte, joins a group of men looking for her, and she herself gets lost in the woods. Lots of adventure and self discovery ensue. She has 5 boys at home, her husband gone and she the sole provider. I loved this book as it wove together prose of the story with her writing and other biographical sketches of characters. The chapters begin with exact dates but once she gets lost they turn into descriptors of weather – a gray evening, rain, and other such simple yet clear titles.

This book inspires me – I won’t spoil the details here and encourage you to discover them yourself.

  1. An enticing review. I just checked out ‘The Mountain in the Sea’ from the library–a JNaz recommendation. So far it is very fascinating. ‘Wild Life’ goes on my reading list.

  3. I enjoyed this book immensely. It took just a bit to find my way in but once I did, wow. What carried me was the voice and attitude of the main character. She was stunning! Brilliant, bold, unafraid to challenge the boundaries of her time. And very funny. I was enchanted by the turns the story took after she takes off for the woods to search for Harriet. I could have lingered with her in that space even longer.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention here, borkali.
