I received this link which I think is worth sharing. The news was so chaotic around 9/11. I missed this story; the video is very moving. It’s about boat rescues at the tip of Manhattan. It is only around 10 minutes long.

  1. This was deeply moving, Barbara. In a time when the worst of humanity becomes more and more visible, it is nice to be reminded what we are capable of. It brings to mind that beautiful line from the movie Starman, when Jeff Bridges asks “…shall I tell you what I find most beautiful about your species? You are at your very best, when things are worst…”

  2. Well – I was about 7 miles away from Ground Zero on 9/11 and this gave me feelings. I just love the tenacity of the folks back East – they quite literally do not fuck around.

    I can’t forget the smoke, wondering whose ashes were floating in front of my eyes.

    It must have been surreal. Terrifying. Disorienting. Heartbreaking. As it was for all of us.

    1. I was in high school – I remember coming out to my car covered in ashes after they made us continue class all day and pretend nothing was amiss. Every time a kid got called to the main office we knew their parents were dead – it happened many, many times throughout the day.

      1. This just leaves me gasping. Why on earth did they think the best thing to do was “pretend everything was ok?” All the while pulling kids out of class…

        It just makes me shiver.

  4. “I can’t forget the smoke, wondering whose ashes were floating in front of my eyes” is heartbreaking when it really sinks in. Your quote made me think that the ashes weren’t just floating by, you had no choice but to breath them in. Bombs have been dropping on people throughout my lifetime and continue to do so. Madness.
