Best of American Poetry

One comment

I recently read an article in LitHub about the 2023 Best of American Poetry and was inspired to investigate the lineage. The series is new to me so I have put several anthologies on hold at the library and invested in a few – such as this first Best of the Best – from Better World Books. Reading the foreword by Lehman — I’m like, this could be written yesterday- the corporate literature complex is mentioned… the machine that publishes for profit as the central, perhaps sole, intent.

I love the concept- pulling poetry together once per year simply based on what the year’s editor decides is worthy. 75 poems each time. I think I might practice this as an exercise this year and select my own series of poems. Now I’m just thinking out loud.

I have skimmed some poems — looking forward to properly digging in. Anyone else follow this Best of ?

  1. I do not follow this series but I have picked it up once or twice over the years. I like this idea of yours about curating your own 75. Would be interesting to see where that leads. I have a “saved poems” file, where I tuck in poems that strike a chord. Perhaps its time to do some excavating and look at what my best of any given year might look like. Hmmmm…
